Usain Bolt completed an amazing triple in Moscow on Sunday winning the 4x100 with the Jamaican team for his eighth gold medal in a World Championship. The sprinter now has ten medals in total, making him the most successful athlete in World Championship history ahead of the American Carl Lewis.
Bolt needed three gold medals in Moscow to go ahead of Lewis. The first came in the 100 metres last Sunday before his success in the 200 metres on Saturday. On the final day of the championships he ran the final leg for the Jamaica team that won in a time of 37.36. The silver went to USA (37.66) and the bronze to Canada (37.92), who benefitted from the disqualification of the British team.
The sprinter and long jumper Carl Lewis took part in his first World Championships in Helsinki 1983, finishing his career in the Atlanta Olympic Games of 1996. In total, he also won 10 medals at World Championship level (8 golds, 1 silver and 1 bronze). Bolt of course now has the same number of golds but goes ahead of Lewis, on account of his two silver medals (no bronzes), to become the greatest athlete in the history of the competition.
